9:00 AM Workshop B: Technology need for electrical components with growth of aircraft market from urban air mobility to large aircraft with megawatt scale propulsion system

•Need for high power density electrical motors and generators and path forward for various technologies (e.g., materials, electromagnetic, thermal management) to increase power density of electrical machines
•Need for high power density power electronics and path forward for various technologies to increase power density of power converters
•Challenges associated with transmission of megawatt level power and strategies to mitigate the challenges
•Challenges associated with thermal management and strategy for integrated thermal management

As the electrified aircraft market expands from small aircraft for the urban air mobility (UAM) market to large aircraft for regional and large aircraft, the development of flight weight electrical components will be enabling for realizing the benefits of electrified propulsion systems.  Key electrical components include motors and generators, power electronics or power conversion system, and power transmission system.  The power densities of electric motors and power conversion systems need to increase by a factor of three to five for future regional and large electrified aircraft using several megawatts of power.  Transmission of megawatts of power in the aircraft will require a lightweight power transmission system, which might require very high voltage transmission system.  The workshop will be focused on the technology path for developing high power density and lightweight power system components.

•Energy storage needs for various classes of electric aircraft (to cover all-electric and hybrid-electric aircraft)
•Assessment of current battery technology
•Various battery attributes required for electrified aircraft
•Assessment of battery development activities throughout the world
•Thoughts on the potential of other non-battery energy storage system
•What needs to be done in the area of energy storage specifically targeted for aviation

An energy storage system with high specific energy is enabling for the initial introduction of electrified aircraft for the urban air mobility sector as well as expansion of the market to a broad segment that includes regional and large aircraft.  The workshop will assess various energy storage options for electrified aircraft, which might include batteries, fuel cells, supercapacitors, and flow batteries.  Energy storage requirements for several classes of aircraft will be reviewed.  Impact of advances in capability of energy storage systems on the evolution of electrified aircraft capability will be assessed.  Specific energy storage research and development needs for electrified aircraft will be discussed.
